Abstract

Intelligent traffic monitoring is an active area of research given the increasing volumes of vehicular traffic around the world leading to the problems as environmental degradation and economic inefficiency. For this purpose, the acquisition of accurate traffic data is essential for optimizing traffic management systems. In this paper, we have presented a review of vision-based vehicle detection and tracking systems for intersection monitoring. Vehicle surveillance systems undergo various difficulties especially in urban traffic scenarios such as road sections and intersection in which dense traffic, vehicle occlusion, pose and orientation variation and camera placement highly affect their performance. In road sections vehicles usually travels in a uni-direction in which heavy traffic and congestion may affect vehicle detection due to slow or temporary stopped vehicles.
