Abstract

An enhanced region of the sky was observed visually and photometrically during routine airglow observations. Photometric observations identified as sodium airglow and determined that the threshold of visibility against sky background was 1.3× 0−11 watts/cm2 ster. A correlation between the variability of the sodium and O I (5577 A) airglows was observed. The data indicate that the observed motions are apparent and show a striking similarity to other ionospheric phenomena. It is suggested that the dynamics of the upper atmosphere connect the various observed phenomena.
