Abstract

Visible-light-induced hydrogen generation from water by seven 1,1'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium compounds (viologen dyes) as electron transfer agents has been investigated. Among these, pentyl viologen (PV +2) was most efficient. The relative rate of hydrogen formation was highest when the redox potential of the viologen was near −0.65 V ( vs. SCE) at pH 4.5. There may also be a relationship between the rate of hydrogen formation and the hydrophobicities of these viologen dyes because of the heterogeneous nature of the ultimate reaction.
