Abstract

The signal visibility is analyzed for an optical-fiber dual-beam laser interferometer in the case where the scattered light from a spherical particle less than several light wavelengths in size is collected with an off-axis small circular aperture. The analysis is based on the Mie theory, and the signal visibility was calculated by means of multipole expansion of electromagnetic fields. Although computed visibility curves show rather oscillatory behavior and therefore seem to be less usable for particle sizing, they could be utilized for precise size measurement. Experimental results obtained by using silicon resin particles as test samples are in good agreement with the calculations.
