Abstract

In order to make it clear what is the difference between viscous properties of saturated and unsaturated clay, and how water content affects viscous properties of clay, a series tests of one dimensional compression and triaxial compression were performed on saturated, wet, air-dried and oven-dried Fujinomori clay. Primary loading, creep, global unloading and reloading were performed in all the tests to evaluate viscous property of the clay. Test results show that viscous property of Fujinomori clay with different water content under different test condition is similar. In order to evaluate the viscous property of Fujinomori clay, parameter beta was introduced basing on the present test results of Fujinomori clay and author's previous study. Test results show that beta value of Fujinomori clay is generally larger with saturated clay than dried clay; and in one dimensional compression tests than in triaxial compression tests.
