Abstract

A theoretical solution is proposed for the problem of flow through a thin orifice plate placed between chambers having large dimensions relative to the orifice diameter. Experimental results were obtained using molasses having a viscosity of the order of 1000 poise. These results confirmed the analysis, but flow was found to be 5–10% less than the theoretical value. This is attributed to the finite size of the chambers of the apparatus and the finite thickness of the orifice plate.
