Abstract

We discuss the viscous and star-forming evolution of self-gravitating galactic discs under modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) proposed by Milgrom. In contrast to Newtonian dynamics, no dark matter is necessary for the rotation curve to be flat at a large distance from the centre. Assuming that the time-scale of star formation is comparable to the viscous time-scale, we obtain, when most gas is converted to stars, an exponential-like distribution of stars and a nearly flat rotation curve, which are in agreement with observed properties of spiral galaxies. The results are similar to previous results obtained under Newtonian dynamics with a dark halo
