Abstract

A general formula is derived for the viscous damping of small amplitude waves in a non-homogeneous fluid of infinite depth. In the case when the associated inviscid wave motion is irrotational the formula reduces to a simple form and shows, in particular, that the damping for a non-homogeneous fluid of constant kinematic viscosity is identical to that for a homogeneous fluid.
