Abstract

Values of Q and A in the expression η= A exp( Q/ RT)have been obtained for dilute solutions of fractions of a Bisphenol A polycarbonate in five solvents. The apparent activation energy of viscous flow Q varies with concentration c and molecular weight M according to Q= Q 0+ K e Mc where Q 0 refers to the solvent and K e is solvent dependent. Values of K e are of similar order of magnitude to those for solutions of flexible chain polymers and considerably less than those obtained with stiff chains. The variation of A with c and M A= A 0+ K a Mc α where A 0 refers to solvent and K a and α are solvent dependent is that obtained for flexible chain polymers. Values of K a tend to be somewhat smaller than for other flexible polar polymers. It is concluded that the chains of Bisphenol A polycarbonate in dilute solutions are flexible although somewhat less so than those of such polymers as polyvinyl acetate and polymethyl methacrylate.
