Abstract

A model is proposed for the sintering of powders via the sliding of particles facilitated by a grain-boundary phase. Data on the initial-stage sintering kinetics of TiB2-modified alumina are used to assess the temperature-dependent viscosity of the grain-boundary phase, formed by Al2O3 , oxidation products of TiB2 , and impurities present on the surface of alumina particles. In the range 1570–1620 K, the temperature variation of viscosity is fitted well by the expression 25.9exp (143 308/ RT).
