Abstract

In this paper, a ether-group functionalized ionic liquid 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-ethylimidazolium thiocyanate [C22O1IM][SCN] was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, ESI mass spectrometry and elemental analysis, and the viscosities of [C22O1IM][SCN] and of binary mixtures with monohydric alcohols (ethanol, 1-propanol, isopropanol and 1-butanol) were measured over the entire range of mole fraction in the temperature range from 288.15 K to 318.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The Arrhenius equation was used to describe the changing trends of viscosity with temperature. To investigate the internal interactions of the mixtures, the viscosity deviations, Δη, and the Gibbs energy of activation for viscous flow of the relative viscosity for the mixture, ΔG≠r, were calculated based on the experimental viscosity, they were all negative values indicating that the hydrogen bond formation between ionic liquid and alcohol. In addition, the related entropies and enthalpies were also calculated and discussed.
