Abstract

The Montreal Protocol and its subsequent amendments have created a schedule to replace ozone depletion substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, with chlorine-free molecules in several industrial applications. Ethyl fluoride (R161, C\(_{2}\)H\(_{5}\)F, 353-36-6) was found to be a potential alternative refrigerant for the replacement of controlled substances, such as R22 with excellent cycle performance. In this work, the viscosity of ethyl fluoride is reported at temperatures from 243 K to 363 K and at pressures from saturation pressure to 30 MPa. The experiment was performed with a calibrated vibrating-wire viscometer, which exhibited a combined expanded uncertainty of 2.5 % with a level of confidence of 0.95 \((k = 2)\) for such a fluid. A scheme based on a hard-spheres model was used to correlate the experimental results. The average absolute deviation of the experimental results from the correlations for R161 is 0.88 %.
