Abstract

The viscosity behaviour of SiO 2 ZrO 2 gelling solutions in dimethylformamide is affected by addition of acetic anhydride, which prolongs the time window suitable for fiber production. This effect is attributed to esterification of the Si OH terminal groups of silica oligomers, avoiding their condensation by cross-linking. The proposed mechanism agrees with the loss of effectiveness of acetic anhydride in n-butanol.
