Abstract

Viscosities and viscosity B-coefficients for tetraethylammonium bromide (Et 4NBr), tetrapropylammonium bromide (Pr 4NBr), tetrabutylammonium bromide (Bu 4NBr) and tetrahexylammonium bromide (Hex 4NBr) have been determined at 298.15K in solvent mixtures of propylene carbonate (PC) with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Combined with our previous data for LiClO 4 and LiBr in the same solvents, ionic B-coefficients and corresponding activation free energies for Li +, Et 4N +, Pr 4N +, Bu 4N +, Hex 4N + and associated anions have been derived from an extrapolating method. It is shown that B-coefficients for all ions except Li + are quite independent of the nature of the solvent and the composition of the solvent mixtures. The constancy in B-coefficients for tetraalkylammonium ion provided an indirect evidence for the unsolvation of large tetraalkylammonium cations in organic solvents. Moreover, the bigger B-coefficients for Li + among the studied ions indicate its stronger interaction with solvent molecules. Solvation number for the ions has also been derived for discussing the interaction of ion with solvents.
