Abstract
The viscosity of water in boundary layers was determined at different shearing forces by means of a special device in which a spherical surface approaches a planar plate. Both surfaces were of fused silica and entirely covered with hydroxyl groups. The surface zone viscosity of water appears to be enhanced up to plate distances of about 1.6 × 10 −5 cm especially for small shearing forces. At sufficiently high shearing forces the anomalous effect vanishes.
