Abstract

Intrinsic viscosities of polyacrylonitrile samples of differing molecular weight have been obtained in dimethyl formamide, dimethyl formamide/water mixtures and in aqueous solutions of zinc chloride at 30°. The value of K in the Flory expression [η] = KM 1 2 α η 3 , obtained by the method of Stockmayer and Fixman, is greater with aqueous solutions of zinc chloride than with dimethyl formamide and dimethyl formamide/water mixtures. It is suggested that this difference, corresponding to one in unperturbed dimensions, is a consequence of solvation. Polyacrylonitrile chains may be somewhat extended in the unperturbed state.
