Abstract

Three ethylene—propylene—hexadiene-1,4 terpolymer-based rubbers were submitted to thermal ageing in the temperature range 110–135°C. Degradation effects on the rubbers were studied using a direct method, FTIR spectroscopy, and two indirect methods, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and dielectrical analysis (DEA). The necessary sensitivity of such methods for the determination of the molecular effects of thermal ageing has been clearly illustrated. Changes in the main relaxation peak height allow the thermooxidation to be quantified.
