Abstract

Vowel inherent spectral change (VISC) has been proved to have special properties for American regional dialect identification. How it varies among sub-dialects in tonal language has never been examined yet. VISC in Chinese were investigated in the present study to see whether tonal variation among regional dialects will cease the role of VISC as a regional dialect indicator. The results of this acoustic study confirmed that vowels still maintain robust and systematic variations in tone language. Vowel inherent spectral change showed noticeable differences among sub-dialect regions, which might prove itself as an important acoustics cue for sub-dialect identification. Tonal variations, however, indeed exist across these sub-dialectal regions. Thus in further studies we would prefer to build models for production and perception with vowels and tones weighted.
