Abstract
SUMMARYIn 1977 in eastern Scotland primocane leaves of the raspberry cultivars Mailing Admiral and Mailing Delight developed numerous yellow blotches after they had been sprayed in June with fenitrothion to control raspberry cane midge (Resseliella theobaldi (Barnes)). The symptoms resembled those caused by the raspberry leaf and bud mite (Phyllocoptes gracilis (Nal.)) and by some viruses. In glasshouse‐pot trials fenitrothion produced similar, virus‐like, symptoms on cvs Mailing Admiral and Mailing Delight and slight symptoms on cv. Glen Clova, but no symptoms developed on cv. Mailing Jewel. Such spray damage could be mistaken for, or mask, genuine virus‐induced symptoms in spawn beds of susceptible cultivars.
