Abstract

The past few years have seen the emergence of a considerable amount of new data concerning the effects and management of virus infections in pregnancy, and this is an opportune moment to review the impact of this information explosion on current practices. This review article will discuss the herpesviruses HSV, VZV, and CMV; rubella virus; parvovirus B19; hepatitis B and C viruses; and human immunodeficiency viruses. As an indicator of the direction in which future research on the consequences of maternal virus infection in pregnancy may develop, some controversial data in relation to influenza virus infection in pregnancy will also be discussed.
