Abstract

Ca ++ ions at a concentration of 0.5–20 mM greatly reduced the hemolysis of chicken erythrocytes caused by Sendai virus . Mn ++, Sr ++ and Ba ++ can replace Ca ++ in preventing the virus induced hemolysis. When the lytic effect of the virus was minimal, fusion of erythrocytes was observed by phase contrast microscope. Fusion indices of 1–8 could be obtained in the presence of Ca ++ or Mn ++.
