Abstract

The World Wide Web (WWW) is no longer restricted to the transfer of hypertext information, but can be used for molecular modeling over the Internet. This can be done using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) information-transfer mechanism, which provides an object-oriented method for the description and manipulation of chemical and biological molecular models. This article describes the structure and capabilities of VRML, and indicates that transporting molecular models over the WWW using VRML is a very efficient and powerful method for the exchange of molecular information, without the need for local modeling packages.
