Abstract

In this paper a new virtual process chain is presented that allows a fast mechanical characterization of foldcores under flatwise compression. The aim is to find the best possible folded configuration with limited overall geometry dimensions providing highest mechanical properties for strength and stiffness under compressive loading. For this purpose an optimization method using the finite element analysis has been developed and validated against physical test results. Finally, the applicability of the presented method is evaluated for Miura-ori, derivatives of the Miura-ori and curved folds, while ensuring manufacturability remains feasible.
