Abstract
This study explores the offer and practices of online dating platforms in South Africa, complemented with an examination of the attitude of young Pentecostals. The aim was to develop an understanding of religion, sexuality and digital culture, with a focus on the pitch of such online dating websites and interviews with young Pentecostals to understand their attitude towards online dating. The study shows that young Pentecostals have little or no interest and need for online dating, and that it is a topic that never comes up in their faith communities’ discourse on sexuality. Born-again dating sites draw on and promote what they perceive to be biblical, heteronormative ideals of Christian romantic relationships and marriage. It argues that these dating platforms and their tools have emerged as facilitators of God’s intended relationship plans for Christians, and thus, locate themselves as an important part of such plans.
