Abstract

We study the problem of virtual path layout in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. Virtual path (VP) and virtual channel are used by the ATM networks in realizing multiplexing, resource management and routing. The layout of virtual paths in ATM networks needs to consider some factors, such as link load, setup complexity, and utilization of routing tables. In addition, the choice of medians in networks in consideration of demand at a node and link cost has been studied extensively. The demand and the cost should also be treated as important factors in the layout of virtual paths on ATM networks. In this article, we consider those factors together and propose a method based on the P-median problem for virtual path layout in ATM networks. The method is shown to provide an asymptotically optimal solution for VP layout in terms of the link load.
