Abstract
SYNOPSISTheoretical calculations have been made to determine the virtual mass and the virtual moment of inertia of the breakwater, and the damping factor of the rocking of the breakwater. Formulae have been obtained for the practical use (Eqs. (41), (42), (45)).The calculations show that the modification to be made by the effect of the virtual mass is very small. As to the damping factor, the calculations give the rate of damping considerably smaller than the values observed in field observation records. The main causes of this discrepancy have been examined.
