Abstract
An axially extracted virtual cathode oscillator has been fabricated. This ultra high power microwave generator consists of the “Chundoong” intense relativistic electron beam pulser (Max 600 kV, 88 kA, and 60 ns duration). In this experiment, a solid electron beam with a diode current of 21 kA is obtained from the operation at a diode voltage of 290 kV. The microwave frequency has been also measured to be 6.07 GHz, its maximum power of extracted microwave is about 520 MW, its conversion efficiency is about 8.5% at a cathode radius of 2.5 cm and the Anode-Cathode (A-K) gap is 5 mm. It has also been found that the propagating microwave mode is a combination of TM01 and the other higher modes from the gas discharge experiment in the air-filled transparent region. The experimental results for the extracted microwave frequency and its power from the axially extracted virtual cathode oscillator are shown to be in good agreement with those the 2-1/2-dimensional “MAGIC” simulations.
