Abstract
Research in the field of virtual acoustics at the Ruhr University of Bochum, as well as in other places in Europe, has focused on binaural room simulation−a method used to accomplish listening into spaces that only exist in the form of computer models. Being based on a combination of traditional techniques for sound-field modeling and binaural technology, binaural room simulation can be used in all kind of areas where the creation of virtual auditory environment is required. Application possibilities include architectural acoustics, advanced man–machine interfaces, virtual reality, and many more. An overview on the development of binaural room simulation in Europe will be given and the current state of the research work in Bochum as well as in other labs will be described.
