Abstract
Fifty-eight sporadic cases of clinical polio were studied for virus isolation. Only 29 cases showed a positive virus isolation leaving 50% as virologically negative. Poliomyelitis viruses as the definitive aetiology was confirmed by positive culture in 18 cases. Non-polio aetiology of paralytic polio-like cases cannot be ignored in view of virus isolation associated with a four-fold rise in antibody titre. The youngest patient in our series was. 8 months of age. The maximum number of sufferers was below 5 years of age. This is in accordance with our earlier findings that 50% of the population in this area acquire antibodies to all 3 serotypes of polio by 5 years of age (Pathak and Hardas 1976). An immunization programme against polio needs to be reinforced particularly in children below 3 years of age.
