Abstract

Abstract In 2006, Virginie Despentes published King Kong théorie, a feminist work of autotheory that explores pornography, sex work, rape, violence against women, and general issues of gender inequity in France. In it, she discloses details of her own personal history, connecting them directly to narrative elements in her first novel Baise-moi (1993), and reflecting specifically on the experience of publishing and promoting Baise-moi and its 2000 film adaptation in the French media. In so doing, Despentes activates the work she does as a public author while transforming fictional material of Baise-moi into political tools that critique current gender constructions and anticipate and participate in powerful collective movements of personal disclosure such as #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc.
