Abstract

The enhanced susceptibility of pregnant MLM-1 mice to EMC was studied. Virus multiplication in the brain was comparable in both pregnant and nonpregnant controls. EMC virus multiplied to higher levels in the hearts of pregnant mice. This was accompanied by myocarditis which was demonstrated histologically. Electrocardiograms of infected pregnant mice evidenced derangement in cardiac function. These findings suggest that involvement of the myocardium during EMC infection might account for the higher mortality rate during pregnancy.
