Abstract

The timing of virus transmission and the pattern of viral replication during perinatal HIV-1 infection are incompletely understood. Previous studies have shown that viral replication occurs during the first weeks of life1 and that treating mother and infant with zidovudine can reduce the risk of vertical transmission by two-thirds.2 We studied early viral replication in perinatal HIV-1 infection prospectively at birth, 2 weeks, and 1 month of life, looking for the presence of HIV-1 virus by PCR with or without HIV-1 culture with standard procedures1 in 180 infants born to HIV-positive mothers.
