Abstract

Baixada Fluminense region is located in the metropolitan area of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Despite the geographical proximity, the territory, that contains 13 municipalities, is dipped in a context of social and historical accumulation of violence, murderers, poverty, underdevelopment and State negligence. The main objective of this investigation was born from this territorial complexity: before such violent territory, what is the perception of the population of Baixada Fluminense about violence, leisure and tourism? The chosen method is both bibliographic and statistical. Thus, the chosen approach was qualitative and quantitative and the research techniques were: bibliographic review and online survey with statistically relevant sampling applied to 385 valid respondents. Among the findings, it is possible to point: (1) the violence manifests in different ways in the territory over different historical times; (2) a considerable part of the interviewees practice leisure in the region and believe in the tourist potential.
