Abstract

Women not only in India but everywhere in the world are facing many problems from womb to tomb. According to UN statistics nearly 50 million women are missing in India. Thus the Legislature was panic stricken and passed the enactment for regularising prenatal diagnostic techniques. The girl children in India are not properly fed even by their own parents and not sent to school and made to work in the household nearly 18 hours a day. Most of the girls get married before they attain puberty. After an year or two they bear children and most of them die while giving birth to their children. Their medical care is very much neglected. Dowry death is another trauma which Indian women face. In view of the atrocities against women - the legislature amended the Indian Penal code (S. 304-B: Dowry Death and S. 498-A: Cruelty) In spite of the amendments and new laws the violence is seen everywhere, even at workplaces. In this context, this paper focuses on the various kinds of violence women face and the recently enacted (26-10-2006) Domestic Violence Act is elaborately discussed.
