Abstract

This study explored South African female sex workers’ (FSWs) experiences of violence by their clients. Informants were eight FSWs aged from 25 to 30 years who obtained clients mainly from the streets and transportation depots of a major metropolitan city. The informants completed open ended interviews on their experiences with violence in their line of work. Thematic analysis of the interview data indicated that the FSWs were exposed to condom refusal, which increased their vulnerability to HIV and other sexuality transmitted infections. In addition, they were forced to continue sexual acts with condom failure or paid extra for not using a condom. Decriminalising the sex work trade would enable FSWs to report violent clients for prosecution.
