Abstract

Every individual has the right to live a life free from fear of exploitation, abuse or neglect. Sadly, some childbearing women live in circumstances which threaten the health and even the life of themselves, their children/their unborn babies. Healthcare professionals have a duty to support the woman and report if they suspect a woman or her child are at risk. The risk may take different forms and not all are easy to identify. As maternity support workers work closely with women and families, they are in a good position to identify women who seem to be at risk. By being aware of the key issues and reporting concerns to the midwife, serious harm may be averted.
