Abstract

AbstractThe photopolymerization of vinyl monomers (e. g., methyl methacrylate and styrene) in benzene solution can be sensitized by 3‐acetoxy‐3.5.5‐trimethyl‐l‐pyrazoline (ATP). The kinetics of the photopolymerization was investigated in the case of methylmethacrylate (MMA). The rate of polymerization was found to be proportional to the one half power of the ATP concentration and approximately to the first power of the MMA concentration. The chain‐transfer constant of ATP for MMA under UV irradiation was estimated as 0.0 at 30°C. The plausible mechanism proposed for the overall reaction is discussed in the light of the experimental results.
