Abstract

When he was a young man, Vin Tangpricha went on a family vacation to Thailand. He attended a show in which the star performers were transgender women. “It opened my eyes to other gender identities and the diversity of gender expressions”, said Tangpricha, who is now Professor of Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine (Atlanta, GA, USA) and director of the Emory's Transgender Clinic. “I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. I am sure there were transgender men and women around, but I had never met any during my childhood, at least not to my knowledge”, Tangpricha told The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
