Abstract

A SYSTEMATIC approach for the selective treatment of the villous papillomas of the rectum and colon will be offered in this presentation. The clinical behavior and the pathogenesis of these tumors is well established and it remains only to agree upon the treatment of choice for the different types. To bring this about there should be agreement between the pathologist and the surgeon upon a classification of the micropathology of these growths from which a proper therapeutic approach can be established.1After reviewing the pathology of 165 cases of villous papillomata and prompted by the magnificent reports in the literature by Swinton,1Dukes,2Morson,3Bacon,4Turnbull,5Scarborough,6Wheat and Ackerman,7Hines,8and others,16-20I decided to use a regional and graded classification depending upon the microscopic anatomic location and the degree of pathologic changes.
