Organisation profile: Promundo by Christine Ricardo and Liz Cooke In this profile, G&D looks at innovative Brazilian NGO, Promundo, which has pioneered gender equality work with men and boys. Interview: Dana Hovig In January 2009, in what was one of the first actions of his new presidency, Barack Obama overturned the policy widely known as the ‘Global Gag Rule’. This rule prevented US funding for any international organisation which provided abortion or offered information or advice on abortion, even in countries where abortion is a legal right. Here we talk to Dana Hovig, Chief Executive Officer of Marie Stopes International (MSI), a key provider of family planning services in many developing countries, on the significance of this move. Women paying the price for the global economic crisis by Bethan Emmett In the economic crisis which continues to affect our globalised economy, some are more vulnerable than others. In this piece, we hear the voices of women who represent some of the first casualties of the global economic downturn – their lack of rights compounding the damage done by the loss of their livelihoods.
