Vietnamese Businesses Not Yet Taking Advantage of Trade Remedies: Realities and Solutions

Abstract

Trade remedies are considered a safety valve to ensure fair trade and protect domestic production against negative impacts. Anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures, three pillars of trade remedies are increasingly popular in international trade practices as evidenced by the increase in the number of trade remedy investigations in recent decades. Vietnam has become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other major international organizations. Deeper economic integration with the rest of the world presents a great opportunity for Vietnam to access global markets. At the same time, Vietnamese businesses are also confronted with numerous challenges including the issues related to unfair competition to domestic production from imports. Consequently, it is important for Vietnam to use trade remedy measures more effectively and improve Vietnam’s participation in trade remedy actions. The purpose of this research article is to provide the general view about Vietnamese businesses’ use of trade remedies and suggestions how to enhance their capability in using the tools.
