Abstract

The article deals with one-stem names of the Lithuanian origin from the 16th century. The data of the analysis consists of ca.14290 binomial Lithuanian personal names of that period. Having assessed the origin of the first part of the binomial name, i.e. first name, it was stated that ca.1600 persons had names of the Lithuanian origin. That makes 11,2% of all first names. Other 12690, or 88,2%, cases are Christian names. It was impossible to determine the origin of some names. All the names of the Lithuanian origin were classified into two groups according to their structure: 1) the old two-stemmed names that make 516 cases and 32% of all the Lithuanian names and 2) one-stemmed names mak ing 1084 cases and 67,7%. All one-stemmed names of the Lithuanian origin consist of the clippings of the old two-stemmed personal names, derivates of those clippings and names derived by other ways of word-formation. Names of all those types, mentioned above, are reconstructed from the 16th century data, their derivation and origin is explained.
