Abstract

An experimental video information system for information retrieval (IR) and computer-aided instruction (CAI), the Video Response System (VRS), was cutover for internal use at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Japan, on 10 January 1977. It is projected as a first step toward developing a versatile video communication medium. The trial system is composed of an information file control centre that can accommodate about 100 terminals and individual transmission lines using telephone pair cables with video band repeaters. Several kinds of service are prepared in the system, so as to allow evaluating system utility and functions. The features and outline of the system and its test results are described.
