Abstract
The authors investigate the performance of multichannel video transmission over optical fibers using pulse position modulation (PPM). Demodulated video signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement and bandwidth requirements of PPM transmission are compared with those of VSB-AM, FM, and pulse code modulation (PCM). The PPM is shown to give the best SNR. Another distinct advantage of the PPM technique is the ability to easily multiplex PCM voice and data signals together with PPM video signals. In this manner, integrated services can be provided on a single optical fiber. The authors propose a method of multiplexed PPM/PCM transmission for the integration of video, voice, music, and data services on a single optical fiber. >
