Abstract

verbal interactions in dynamic workplaces where multiple, simultaneous events occur, and team members perform complex tasks under several levels of urgency, can be a challenge. Such brief interactions can be central to interpretation and hypothesis development for identification of safety performance problems and opportunities for improvement. Equally, observation of risky, but beneficial tasks can identify an important source of practices that lessen the margin of safety. This article describes the implementation and application of a video data acquisition and audio communication system at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The performance-related insights and advantages for enhancement of observation to improve performance and safety in the workplace are described. The results of application of this video and audio acquisition system are a resource for comparison with non-medical domains.
