Abstract

This chapter analyzes the standing of the victim, its relation to sacrifice, and the prevailing role that the narrative of the massacre of Jews in Europe (the Shoah) has played in the shaping of Israeli national identity. In this chapter, I approach the biblical story known as the “the binding of Isaac.”It includes a philological analysis of the biblical terms used to name different forms of sacrifice. The resonance of the sacrifice signifiers found in the Israeli military discourse is highlighted. The abuse of the memory of the destruction of the European Jews in Palestine/Israel is also analyzed in this chapter.
