Abstract

Describes the development of the Sustaining Oncology Studies (SOS) project, a World Wide Web (WWW) resource for organizing information on oncology available via the Internet, and for supplying users with locally held material. Focuses on a particular section of the SOS system: the Virtual Cancer Library (ViCLib) project (URL <http://sos.unige.it/viclib.html>); which includes a database of regional and national library catalogues and some specialized hypertext links to sources of specialized oncological information. ViCLib was conceived and developed by the National Institute for Cancer Research, Genoa, Italy and the Department of Clinical and Experimental Oncology, Genoa University. Hyperlinks are provided to an international network of online public access catalogues (OPACs), international document delivery agencies, electronic periodicals; and specialized navigation tools and facilities such as: electronic mail; File Transfer Protocol (FTP); and Telnet.
