Abstract

Abstract Spectacular recent developments in personal computers caused the author, who has been involved in computer-aided design of induction motors for over 25 years, to investigate if and how a pc could be used to design single-phase motors. In putting such a mainframe computer program on his own personal computer, the author found first, that the program had to be restructured, and then that it took more than twice as much memory as it did on the mainframe computer. Single-phase programs, described in this article, are now starting to be used in a number of locations, on personal and on mainframe computers. The author believes that there will be a growing use of personal computers in the future for this, and for other engineering applications.
