Abstract
Voltage-independent cation (VIC) channels are present in the plasma membrane of plant cells. They are permeable to a range of monovalent cations and might catalyse the uptake of both nutrient (NH4+,K+) and toxic (Cs+,Na+) cations. They are also permeable to Ca2+ and it is possible that their principal role is in Ca2+ physiology.
