Abstract

Vibronic transition probabilities A vibin the emission spectra of Gd 3+ in LaF 3, LiYF 4 LaAlO 3, and La 2O 3 are reported. Data for Cs 2NaGdCl 6 and YOCl, obtained from the literature, are also discussed. The vibronic transition probabilities vary by two orders of magnitude: from A vib = 2 s −1 to A vib = 114 s −1 for the 6P 7 2 → 8S 7 2 transition of Gd 3+ in LaF 3 and YOCl, respectively. The difference is mainly due to differences in the polarizability of the ligands of Gd 3+. The Stokes vibronic transition probability in the 6P 7 2 → 8S 7 2 transition in LaAlO 3:Gd 3+ and the anti-Stokes vibronic transition probability in 6P 7 2 → 8S 7 2 transition in LiYF 4:Gd 3+ are measured as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence is in agreement with existing theories.
